The Holy Spirit has given two of my participants the same general vision, in which a demon is visualized as yarn being pulled out of the participant’s veins. In both cases the interpretation of the parable was generally the same: this particular demon has deeply integrated its themes into the participant’s understanding of self.
Such a participant doesn’t just have a demon with the theme of abandonment. Such a participant has become the theme of abandonment. The demon’s yarn runs through every vein, and the participant needs to work hard to relearn their identity and heal.
Identity is a major part of exorcism. Demons want to redefine who we are not only to ruin our lives, but also to secure their place in our lives. So long as we endorse what they endorse, they’re safe to stick around.
On the other hand, the Holy Spirit wants to free us to define ourselves in the image of God, which is Jesus, himself (Colossians 1:15). But if we identify ourselves by the lesser gods, the lesser gods will continue to prey on our minds.
Yarn demons can take some time for the participant to overcome since their thinking is so deeply entrenched. It’s not that a person doesn’t want to believe the things that God says about them, it’s just that God’s opinion feels so foreign. More so, his opinion feels wrong. The demon uses stories from the participant’s life to create the illusion that God is wrong and they are right.
Be patient. The Holy Spirit will guide them into truth as you walk with them. Relearning does not happen overnight.
