The Holy Spirit had just finished giving my participant a powerful vision to help them understand how their trauma had twisted their view of men. They sat their with their eyes closed, amazed at what they had seen, when the whole vision blew up into hundreds of pieces.

This threw us into some confusion. Was the Holy Spirit trying to give us an ominous heads-up about something? Or was this a playful way of saying we were done with the day’s session? Or did demons just take over the vision?

“Holy Spirit, is there anything you’d like to say about this explosion?” I asked.

“Demons will be demons,” the participant heard.

“Yeah, that checks out,” I laughed. “Clearly they didn’t like all the good things you just saw.”

Binding demons so they don’t interfere with a session is a bit of a tricky issue. I do it, but I don’t consider it foolproof or permanent. It typically only works if I’m in the room with the participant and doing a session. I’ll tell the demons to get out of the way so that the participant can meet with the Holy Spirit, and if they resist, I’ll speak in tongues until I can feel that they’ve backed off. While I do this, the participant sometimes hears a fair amount of cursing in their head and tells me, “I think they’re mad at you.”

“Yeah, I get that a lot,” I respond.

But, like I said, this binding tends to be temporary. When demons get flustered at what the Holy Spirit is doing, they use whatever strategies they can to confuse what is happening and get in the way of the session. In the case of the participant above, I sensed that the Holy Spirit was done with the session, so the demons were not as suppressed as before.

Binding prayers are great, but they’re not magic like many people treat them. Sometimes they work for awhile, and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes there are more demons present than the ones you bound. Some demons are stronger than others. Remember, an angel showed up to Daniel 3 weeks late because a powerful demon god got in the way. It’s called spiritual warfare for a reason.
