“I can’t see Jesus,” my participant said after trying to imagine him for a long time.
There are several different prompts I will give people when this happens. On this particular day, I settled for a spiritual warfare response: “Any and all demons that are trying to stop us from talking with the Holy Spirit need to get out of the way right now in the name of Jesus.”
With those words, I immediately felt a surge of energy come into my body that I had come to recognize from many exorcism sessions. A demon was getting in the way—I could feel it. As I usually do in such moments, I spoke in tongues until the tingling sensation moved off my body.
“Okay, you should be good now,” I said when the sensation ended. They closed their eyes and immediately saw Jesus.
I get it. For most people, there’s nothing very convincing here. In order to fight invisible spirits that I make manifest in a person’s imagination, I pay attention to tingles in my body and speak in gibberish. Seriously Jamin, why even try to convince people of exorcism?
Welcome to the realm of faith—a crucial ingredient to doing supernatural ministry (or just living the Christian life in general). My old mentor used to say that tongues are a great entry level gift because no other spiritual gift requires more faith.
I’m glad I remained open to this gift because it has been consistently helpful during exorcism. When something is happening that I don’t understand, I respond by speaking in a language I don’t understand. Somehow, this odd exchange often has a way of working things out.
