“Have you ever noticed that whenever you try to get spiritually healthy, it’s like everything seems to work against you?” my professor once asked the class.
Welcome to spiritual warfare. Demons will generally settle for two things in your life: (1) a decline in your spiritual health, or (2) a plateau in your spiritual health. What they will not stand for is you deciding to get better. When you try to overcome their themes, they will retaliate as quickly as possible to stop you. To do this, demons make plans. While they have quite a few strategies ready to go, they don’t always know what will work ahead of time. Sometimes they’ll try things at random to see if anything sticks. Other times they’ll go quiet for a while as they plot out a new strategy.
One time, the Holy Spirit alarmed my participant that the demons had created a new strategy and that it was going to hit hard. We weren’t told what the strategy was, but I had been chewing on some thoughts for a while about how to fight them, and so I enacted my own attack. Later that night, the participant could hear the demons talking to each other.
“What are we supposed to do now?” one demon asked, as another offered a new plan. “That will never work now!” the demon shot back.
Nothing causes demons to scheme against us more than us pushing back on their themes. Deliverance is a commitment that requires effort and strategy on our part. As Jesus once said, we must be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Every situation is different and every angle the demons take requires us to rethink our own attack. It’s called spiritual warfare for a reason. Fortunately for us, the Spirit of wisdom knows how to help us overcome any trap that comes our way.
